These eight beatitudes or characteristics of the Kingdom Citizen can be broken into two categories — divine and human. The first four characteristics — poor in spirit, mournful, gentle, and hunger and thirst for righteousness — relate to the divine. That is, they deal with the Kingdom citizen’s relationship with God. The second four characteristics — merciful, pure in heart, peacemaker, and persecuted — related to humanity. That is, they deal with the Kingdom citizens relationship with their fellow man.
