The Divine Works of the Holy Spirit: Part 1 - Creation

TBC Glassboro Sermons and More · The Divine Works Of The Holy Spirit: Part 1 - Creation
Genesis 1:1 states, “God created”.  The name God translates the Hebrew title Elohim, the plural form of El.  By joining the plural noun Elohim to the singular verb created (bārā’), it establishes the triunity of the Godhead.  Psalm 33:6 confirms the three members of the Godhead — the Lord, the Word, and the Breath.
  • By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And by the Breath (ruach) of His mouth all their host. - Psalm 33:6

The term Lord translates the Hebrew divine title YHWH, which refers to God the Father.  The Word is none other than Jesus, the Son of God.  The term breath (ruach) can also be translated as spirit.  Hence, the Breath of His mouth is none other than the Holy Spirit.
  • By His breath the heavens are cleared; - Job 26:13a
  • The Spirit of God has made me, And the Breath of the Almighty gives me life. - Job 33:4
The book of Job is primarily poetic and, as such, is rich with parallelism.  This parallelism is used to show equality.  In Job 33:4, the phrase ‘the Spirit of God’ is parallel to the phrase ‘the Breath of the Almighty.’  This shows that the Spirit of God and the Breath of God are equal or the same.

Genesis 1:2 states, that “darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.  The term was moving (rāḥap) means to brood, hover, or flutter over.  The hovering aspect describes the preparation for the hatching of an egg.  Here, the Holy Spirit is hovering, like a mother bird, waiting for the dry land to hatch from the primeval world ocean.  The term waters (mayim) is different from the deep (ḥōšek).  The deep (ḥōšek) was a chaotic lifeless abyss but now that the Holy Spirit is managing the unformed and unfilled it is being transformed into life sustaining waters.  Hence, creation is subject to the superintendence or divine directing of the Holy Spirit.

    WHY TWO MINUTES?

The Two-Minute Rule states “When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do.”   The idea behind the rule is to make a habit easy to start.
One of the goals for 2-Minute Theology is to help believers develop a theological habit.
Another goal is to provide believers with a resource they can use to 'test the spirits' to see if they are from God.
