TBC Glassboro Sermons and More · The Kingship Of Christ: Part 8 - Christ’s Future Reign
During Christ’s First Advent, He offered to establish His kingdom on earth.  At His Second Advent, Christ will establish His physical kingdom on earth.

Following the Tribulation, Christ will appear in the sky with the sound of the great trumpet.  He will return to earth and wage war against the nations.
  • Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fights on a day of battle.  - Zechariah 14:3
  • And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. - Revelation 19:19

Christ will defeat the Antichrist, casting him and the False  Prophet into the Lake of Fire.
  • And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone. - Revelation 19:20

The angels gather the righteous and unrighteous.
  • And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.  And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other. - Matthew 24:30-31
  • The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, - Matthew 13:41

The angels will then cast the unrighteous into Hell.
  • and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. - Matthew 13:42

The righteous Jews will reconstitute the redeemed nation of Israel.  The righteous Gentiles will reconstitute the redeemed Gentile nations.  Christ will reign over Israel and the world forever as King.
  • He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end. - Luke 1:32-33
  • And the Lord will be king over all the earth; in that day the Lord will be the only one, and His name the only one. - Zechariah 14:9

TBC Glassboro Sermons and More · The Kingship Of Christ: Part 6 - Christ’s Present Reign
During Christ’s First Advent, He offered to establish His kingdom on earth.
  • Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. - Matthew 3:2

However, due to Israel’s rejection, the establishment of His kingdom on earth was postponed and reserved for a future nation.
  • Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it. - Matthew 21:43

The postponement of His kingdom on earth does not limit Christ’s ability to reign.  Following His resurrection and ascension, God the Father seated Christ at His right hand and gave Him all authority to rule.
  • which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet - Ephesians 1:20-23

Presently, Christ is reigning from Heaven over a spiritual kingdom.
  • For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, - Colossians 1:13

He is reigning amid His enemies.
  • The Lord says to my Lord: Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet. The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying, Rule in the midst of Your enemies. - Psalm 110:1-2

When He returns, after the Tribulation, Christ will establish His physical kingdom on earth.

TBC Glassboro Sermons and More · The Kingship Of Christ: Part 5 - Acceptance Of Christ’s Kingship
Gabriel announced to Mary that the Lord had given her Son, the throne of His father, David (Luke 1:31-32).
  • You will… bear a Son… and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; - Luke 1:31-32

Matthew records the visit of the Magi, who came looking for the King of the Jews.  When speaking with Herod, the Magi confirmed the Old Testament prophecy of Micah 5:2 — “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah… From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel” (Matthew 2:5-6).

Upon meeting Christ for the first time, future apostle Nathanael declared that He was the King of the Jews.
  • Nathanael answered Him, Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel. - John 1:49

James’ and John’s mother acknowledged Jesus’ kingship when she asked that her sons have a place of prominence in His kingdom.
  • She said to [Christ], Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left. - Matthew 20:21

Christ accepted and announced His kingship upon entering Jerusalem the week before His death, in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 (Matthew 21:2-5).
  • Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. […] This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: Behold your King is coming to you, Gentle, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden. - Matthew 21:2-5

During His trial, when Pilate asked if Jesus was the King, Christ answered that He was.
  • So Pilate asked Him, saying, Are You the King of the Jews? And He answered him and said, It is as you say. - Luke 23:2-3

Christ also declared to Pilate that He was born into this world to be the King.
  • Therefore Pilate said to Him, So You are a king? Jesus answered, You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, - John 18:37

When He was crucified, the charge against Him was the He was the King of the Jews (John 19:19).
  • Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS. - John 19:19

While dying on the cross, the penitent thief acknowledge Christ’s kingship.
  • And he was saying, Jesus, remember me when You come 1in Your kingdom! - Luke 23:42

TBC Glassboro Sermons and More · The Kingship Of Christ: Part 4 - Christ’s Qualifications
The Gospels of Matthew and Luke provide the genealogical record of Jesus Christ.
  • The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:              - Matthew 1:1

Matthew traces Christ’s lineage through His adoptive father, Joseph, whereas Luke traces Christ’s lineage through His mother, Mary.  Both records demonstrate that Jesus Christ is Jewish and a direct descendant of David.  Thus, He has the proper legal descent to be King.

Christ was anointed King at His baptism.
  • After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,     and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased. - Matthew 3:16-17
  • You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power,            - Acts 10:38

At His temptation in the wilderness Christ demonstrated that He was morally qualified to the King.
  • [Christ] committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; - 1 Peter 2:22

Early on His ministry, Christ demonstrated that as King, He knew and guarded the Law.
  • Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. - Matthew 5:17-18

The Kingship of Christ: Part 3 - Prophecy, the Davidic Covenant

TBC Glassboro Sermons and More · The Kingship Of Christ: Part 3 - Prophecy, The Davidic Covenant
In the Davidic Covenant, God promised that the promised King would be a descendent of David.
  • When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. - 2 Samuel 7:12-13

The promised descendant would build the Temple and his reign would be forever.  God will install this King and He will reign from Jerusalem.
  • But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain - Psalm 2:6

From Jerusalem, the King will subdue His enemies and rule over them.
  • The Lord says to my Lord: Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet. The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying, Rule in the midst of Your enemies. - Psalm 110:1-2

This descendant from the tribe of Judah and the lineage of David will be born in Bethlehem but will be also be eternal (Micah 5:2).  In Psalm 110:1, states that the Lord (YHWH) spoke to my Lord (Adonai).  YHWH represents the Father and Adonai represents the Son.  The Son will sit at His Father’s right hand and reign.  Thus, the One who will be King is none other than the eternal Son of God.    Presently, He rules from Heaven, but one day, He will rule from New Jerusalem over the whole world.
  • I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed. - Daniel 7:13-14

The Kingship of Christ: Part 2 - Prophecy, the Scepter

TBC Glassboro Sermons and More · The Kingship Of Christ: Part 2 - Prophecy, The Scepter
The earliest prophecy foretelling of the Kingship of Christ is found in the Torah. Jacob prophesied that the coming Messiah would be a King and He would come from the tribe of Judah.
  • The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. - Genesis 49:10

Further, the scepter or staff, that is the symbol of the authority, will not pass from Judah until Shiloh comes.  The term until means in perpetuity.  Ultimately, the symbol of authority will culminate in Shiloh — the person of peace.  Shiloh is none other than the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ.

Balaam, the prophet for hire, attempted to curse Israel, but instead uttered a prophecy about the coming King.
  • I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; A star shall come forth from Jacob, A scepter shall rise from Israel, And shall crush through the forehead of Moab, And tear down all the sons of Sheth. - Numbers 24:17

The concept of the scepter is a symbol of kingship.  The specifics of this kingship are revealed in the David Covenant.
  • When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. - 2 Samuel 7:12-13

The Kingship of Christ: Part 1 - Purpose

TBC Glassboro Sermons and More · The Kingship Of Christ: Part 1 - Purpose
The Old Testament Jewish king was unlike the kings of the surrounding nations.  The kings of that era were often unmatched in their authority and power.  However, the Jewish king was a vassal or subordinate to a greater King, specifically, YHWH.  This vassal relationship was part of the suzerain covenant that existed between God and Israel.  God was the suzerain who protects and provides for the vassal, in this case, Israel.  The terms of protection and provision were secure so long as the vassal abided by the covenant’s terms.  These rules or laws would be written down, read publicly, and confirmed.  The Law, as given at Sinai, provided the rules by which Israel, as the vassal, was to abide.

Within the Law, God made a provision for an earthly king or lesser king (i.e., vassal) who would represent the people before Him.
  • When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, and you possess it and live in it, and you say, I will set a king over me like all the nations who are around me, you shall surely set a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses, one from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman. - Deuteronomy 17:14-15

Specifically, the king would be Jewish and chosen by YHWH.  As such, the king was anointed by God to the task.  The king’s chief function was to learn, read, and observe the Law
  • Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests. It shall be with him and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, by carefully observing all the words of this law and these statutes, - Deuteronomy 17:18-19
  • Keep the charge of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies, according to what is written in the Law of Moses, that you may succeed in all that you do and wherever you turn, - 1 Kings 2:3

The king was to be the key teacher and enforcer of the Law.  Being the Law’s guardian, he was granted limited powers to adjudicate, enforce punishments, and execute lawbreakers.  However, the king did not control the judicial system.  The Law established a judiciary of priests, with the high priest serving as the judge.  If the king violated God’s Law, it was the prophets' responsibility to announce judgment against him and potentially remove the king if need be (cf. 1 Samuel 13-14; 2 Samuel 7; 1 Kings 11:29-39).

    WHY TWO MINUTES?

The Two-Minute Rule states “When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do.”   The idea behind the rule is to make a habit easy to start.
One of the goals for 2-Minute Theology is to help believers develop a theological habit.
Another goal is to provide believers with a resource they can use to 'test the spirits' to see if they are from God.
